Mickey Hart, one of the original members of the Grateful Dead, brought his band through Athens this past Monday might. While I have never been much of Grateful Dead fan, not that I don't appreciate their body of work, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to photograph a jamband living legend. For those of that don't anything about Mickey is one of the drummers that is all about sounds and all things percussive and he brought a massive rig to beat around on. I was only able to shoot for about 45 minutes before I had to leave but I saw the band weave through about 3-4 classic Grateful Dead songs and I was really impressed with where they took the songs once they started jamming. I didn't know anyone else in the band except for Reed Mathis on bass and he is one of the best in the biz. I will say, and I've thought this for a while, that there isn't much sadder in the music scene than old Deadheads still hanging on and trying to channel Jerry or shit like that. Man will people say that about me and Phishhead friends when are 60 plus?
